In this PBL, students will be asked to be in charge of the International Women’s Day campaign in Barcelona on the 8th March. Students will explore the portrayal of women in media and advertising from the 1950’s to present day. Having built and gained a greater insight into women’s role in society and gained an understanding of how visuals are used to communicate messages in the media, students will explore the pictorial and social characteristics of the Pop Art movement. They will explore the portrayal of women in relation to the contemporary fight for equality. Students will also investigate the international response to women’s rights and general strike in Spain on International women’s day. Finally, students will be asked to create their campaign posters or banners, inspired by the theoretical framework. Students will be encouraged to use different types of materials such as cardboard, clothes, pillow cases, etc. and display it in school, in order to make the school community more aware of the urgent need to create a more conscious, freer and equal society.

Escola Alegre

Escola Alegre is located in the neighborhood of Can Serra in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat. The school was built in 1967, with the aim and expectation of offering education and expanding the eductive offer due to the increase in the population arriving in Catalonia from various points of Spain and overseas. The neighborhood where our school is located is a middle/low district, which has gone through transformations over the years. In the 60-70s, there was a strong immigration from different parts of Spain, mostly from Andalusia and Extremadura. However, at present, there is a significant increase in immigrants from most of South America and Maghreb, and from a minority of European and Asian countries. With this type of population, the language used in the neighborhood is Spanish. Almost 85% of this population uses this language in their family and social environment. The school welcomes students from 0-18 years old in a single educative line. The school is engaged in different pedagogical innovation projects which makes it a pioneer school in the area where it is located.
